SAP is the name of both a German company and its ERP software. SAP AG's name (Systeme, Anwendungen, Produkte in der Datenverarbietung ) translates as Systems, Applications, Products in Data Processing.

SAP AG was founded in 1972 by 5 ex-IBM engineers in the city of Walldorf , near Heidelberg .
